You get what you bought plus something extra in the form of a small check every year, a rebate or a free airline ticket or rental car.

Sure, the retailer is after your money but as long as you understand what you have to spend to get the Bonus Money, you can register for these programs with a good idea of what you get in exchange for participating in the program.
